Roberto Di Matteo Expects Tough Challenge

By Ewan Day-Collins

17 February 2012

Having taken over the reins at Chelsea FC after Andre Villas-Boas’ departure, Roberto Di Matteo could be forgiven for his caution. A club in a volatile and precarious state appears a poisoned chalice, yet after a miraculous extra-time victory over Napoli on Wednesday, Di Matteo finds himself in relative comfort compared to what he could have expected. ODI Success Does Not Compensate for Test Failure

By Ewan Day-Collins

23 February 2012

England must be fully aware that their dreadful series of capitulations in the recent Test arena will not be reconciled by even the most marvellous of ODI victories. Despite whitewashing the 50 over contests against Pakistan with sublime ease, the abject displays in the ultimate format, which followed each other with disturbing proximity, will be very difficult to forget. TO BE, OR NOT TO BE THE NEXT ENGLAND MANAGER: THAT IS THE QUESTION.

By Rasmus Lukunka

17 February 2012

It’s hard to understand why so many people were surprised by the departure of Fabio Capello. He was initially heralded the saviour of English football before deeply disappointing and under-delivering in key matches; notably at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Upon the surface his record as England manager with a 66.67 percent win ratio certainly seems respectable. However, it’s clear that 28 victories out of 42 games came against the likes of Kazakhstan, Belarus, Egypt, Slovenia, Montenegro, Trinidad & Tobago, just to name a few. Read more »

Ferguson Proves His Managerial Excellence

By Ewan Day-Collins

11 February 2012

Manchester United and Liverpool is always a ferocious battle. Yet unfortunately both clubs have been clouded by toxic fumes of the Luis Suarez saga. But, through the ashes of that fateful Barclays Premier League match between the two clubs last year, one team and their leader has risen considerably.

The other equally great sporting institution has fallen. The key difference is in the attitude of the two managers – Sir Alex Ferguson and Kenny Dalglish. Indubitably the two most influential men in the Premier League with regards to their standing at their respective clubs, they both hold ultimate power. Yet, whereas one decided to act irresponsibly with it, the other operated with dignity. Read more »

Reality Show: Manchester United FC Starring Sir Alex Ferguson

By Rasmus Lukunka

08 February 2012

Love them or hate them, Manchester United are a special club and love him or hate him, Sir Alex Ferguson is an extraordinary manager.

If Jose Mourinho is commonly known as ‘the special one,’ then Sir Alex should surely take the title of ‘the anointed one.’

How many managers known today, have managed the same club for more than 25 years and managed to notch up 19 league titles? Not to mention multiple other accolades such as Champions League, FA, and Carling Cups! Read more »

England Heavily Defeated – But Panic Not the Answer

By Ewan Day-Collins

22 January 2012

If attritional cricket was required by both Pakistan and England in their current three match series, it was unapparent today, or, for that matter, the previous two days. It seems rather odd to be writing of, not only an England defeat, but one so enormous that the game ended in just three days – two short of the available five. It was just months ago when England were replicating this against their opponents. Yet, so dismal was their batting performance that they deserved no less than a hiding – which they achieved will maximum effect. Read more »

EPL Update: Pretenders, Contenders, and Challengers

By Rasmus Lukunka

20 Jan 2012

It was a thrilling first half in the Premier League. Only one manager, Neil Warnock of Queens Park Rangers, was sacked while Steve Kean at Blackburn survived. Chelsea and Arsenal looked shades of their former selves while newcomers Norwich and Swansea provided a breath of fresh air. Newcastle sold their “star players” but improved on their performance and results. Kenny Dalglish has spent real big money but is yet to receive a return on that investment. Read more »

Strauss Aware of Pakistan’s Threat

By Ewan Day-Collins

England will grace pastures new for the next two months as they play Pakistan in a three-match Test series, followed by four ODIs and three T20s in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. According to captain Andrew Strauss it will be a “stern challenge” for England who have to combat not only the relatively unknown pitches of the newest additions to the cricketing world, but also a Pakistan team in better form than many are aware of. England must especially be aware that their opponents’ squad includes the potent off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, who took exactly 50 wickets in just 8 Test matches in 2011. Read more »
