England Defeated

England Heavily Defeated – But Panic Not the Answer

By Ewan Day-Collins

22 January 2012

If attritional cricket was required by both Pakistan and England in their current three match series, it was unapparent today, or, for that matter, the previous two days. It seems rather odd to be writing of, not only an England defeat, but one so enormous that the game ended in just three days – two short of the available five. It was just months ago when England were replicating this against their opponents. Yet, so dismal was their batting performance that they deserved no less than a hiding – which they achieved will maximum effect. Read more »

EPL Update: Pretenders, Contenders, and Challengers

By Rasmus Lukunka

20 Jan 2012

It was a thrilling first half in the Premier League. Only one manager, Neil Warnock of Queens Park Rangers, was sacked while Steve Kean at Blackburn survived. Chelsea and Arsenal looked shades of their former selves while newcomers Norwich and Swansea provided a breath of fresh air. Newcastle sold their “star players” but improved on their performance and results. Kenny Dalglish has spent real big money but is yet to receive a return on that investment. Read more »

Strauss Aware of Pakistan’s Threat

By Ewan Day-Collins

England will grace pastures new for the next two months as they play Pakistan in a three-match Test series, followed by four ODIs and three T20s in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. According to captain Andrew Strauss it will be a “stern challenge” for England who have to combat not only the relatively unknown pitches of the newest additions to the cricketing world, but also a Pakistan team in better form than many are aware of. England must especially be aware that their opponents’ squad includes the potent off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, who took exactly 50 wickets in just 8 Test matches in 2011. Read more »

Chelsea’s Title Chances Over.

By Ewan Day-Collins

26th December 2011 at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea 1 (Mata, 47)
Fulham 1 (Dempsey, 56)

When Bryan Ruiz cut loose on the right, rounded a defender with superb skill then sent in an inviting cross that was tapped by Dempsey’s foot into the goal it was perhaps a portent for Chelsea. If it needed clarification the West-London side are now firmly in a tussle for third place; the league title finally beyond them.

This wasted opportunity to close the ever-increasing gap between them and Manchester City showed the conviction that has been missing for the last two seasons. The deserted strength to not only achieve results against the league leaders and high-fliers Newcastle, but to subsequently support this with three points against lesser teams such as Wigan and Fulham has been what has inhibited Chelsea in recent years – and it was once again shown today. When United Slip, Executioners Rejoice!

By Rasmus Lukunka

After a stunning start to the season, Manchester United has recently faced its fair share of challenges. These include an historic loss to their noisy neighbours who consequently leapt 5 points clear, a loss on home soil to Crystal Palace which dumped them out of the Carling Cup and the most shocking and costly defeat at the hands of Basel ending the road in the Champions League.

As to be expected and especially considering the success United has had over the past 20+ years – the executioners are out. They’re licking their lips with razor sharp teeth, ready to take a bite. They’re greeting every slip-up United experience with loud cheer and euphoria! Read more »

If Liverpool is Right – This Stand on Racism is a False Hope

By Ewan Day-Collins

22nd December, 2011

Luis Suarez has been handed an eight match ban and a £40,000 fine by the FA this week for racially abusing Patrice Evra in a heated match between Liverpool and Manchester United. Yet, Liverpool FC, on their website, claim that not only will they stand by Suarez’s claim of not guilty, but they believe to have a found a potential issue in the evidence of the proceedings. Chelsea’s Progression is far more Significant than United’s Exit

By Ewan Day-Collins

8th December 2011 at Stamford Bridge

It was perhaps the most unlikely of outcomes of a Champions League week that, to many observers, looked to hold no real reason for anticipating excitement or surprise. Yet the outcome at the end of it read that Manchester United, last years’ losing finalist, failed to qualify due to an abject performance last night. Meanwhile, one night previous to United’s loss, on Tuesday, witnessed a stunning showing at home as Chelsea progressed through as group leaders to the second round of Europe’s stellar competition. Long Balls, Hard Tackling, and Direct Play…Now That’s Beautiful!

By Rasmus Lukunka

I sometimes find it rather challenging to share my thoughts on certain views without expressing my irritation. This time I’m irritated by all the talk of how Barcelona’s style of play epitomized the beautiful game. I understand that I’m probably 1 out-of 1000 who dares to challenge what has become the status quo in this view…and I’m ok with it. Read more »

Wolves Win Takes Pressure Off AVB

By Ewan Day-Collins

26th November 2011 at Stamford Bridge

It was a good win. A win much needed for Andre Villas Boas, the Chelsea manager, after a horror run, including a last minute defeat mid-week in Leverkusen that could potentially jeopardise Chelsea’s Champions League safety. A man much maligned in some quarters, and even his most loyal supporters admitting he is under considerable pressure, Villas Boas could afford nothing less than a win today, which his team achieved through a solid, consistent performance, punctuated with a few moments of brilliance. Practice begins at home

By Rasmus Lukunka

Most people have heard the phrase “Practice begins at home.” If you haven’t? Then you have now! But a home doesn’t necessarily have to be a traditional formation involving a family living under the same roof. Home can also be a general environment that you belong to or have been involved with for a period in your life. Whatever the set up, it’s at home where behaviours and skills connect to form your character. Read more »
